I'm a Little Teapot
Oct. 29th, 2009 06:18 pmI'm a little teapot, must be one of the more memorable childhood songs, which makes it utterly confusing that I can't remember the 5th line.
I've heard lots of different versions of it as an adult, but they all sound wrong somehow.
Having ended up singing it last weekend, it seems appropriate time for a poll (especially as I haven't had one in ages)...
[Poll #1478066]
Have a strange feeling I may have posted a very similar poll before, but as I'm still not enlightened, I reserve the right to repeat myself

Opinion Poll Results
Jun. 5th, 2009 10:07 amSo, judging by the results of my not exactly unbiased opinion poll and overly simplifing the electoral system to be entirely based on proportional representation, the UK representation of on the EU parlement should look something like this on Sunday:
A bit of a swing to the left there...
I somewhat expect it won't quite turn out that way, but it would be nice if it did.
| Party | Votes | Proportion | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liberal Democrats | 30 | 40.00% | 28 |
| Green Party | 15 | 20.00% | 14 |
| Conservative | 8 | 10.67% | 8 |
| UK Independence Party | 7 | 9.33% | 7 |
| Plaid Cymru | 2 | 2.67% | 2 |
| The Roman Party | 2 | 2.67% | 2 |
| Yes2Europe | 2 | 2.67% | 2 |
| English Democrats | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Fair Play Fair Trade Party | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Jury Team | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Liberatus | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Scottish National Party | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Socialist Democratic & Labour Party | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Socialist Party of Great Britain | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Ulster Conservatives & Unionists: New Force | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Independent | 1 | 1.33% | 1 |
| Total | 75 | 100% | 72 |

Election Poll
Jun. 4th, 2009 10:08 amAs it's EU election day, it seems appropriate to have an election poll, to see what the EU representation would be if voted for entirely by people who stumble on this post.
Secret ballot, so detailed results not viewable (although shockingly lj doesn't seem to let me make them unviewable to me, so I'll just have to promise not to look and hope that wills suffice).
Don't feel you have to vote for the same party as you did in the real thing (because of course you have all voted, haven't you?) or even for a party that is represented in your constituency.
Full list of parties below taken from the BBC.
Of course, only one vote (although I've had to split it into separate polls as there seem to be lots of random parties).
[Poll #1410824]
EDIT: Missed one

There are mushrooms in this week's vegbox. The world is truely a glorous place today :-)
Don't worry, I do have more to say other than just "yum".
I had a conversation with my sister about mushrooms (yes, I talk to people about the most interesting of topics, don't I?) and how to prepare them, which we do very differently, so out of curiousity, a poll:

The North-South Divide
Feb. 16th, 2009 05:31 pmA conversation with
morganmuffle yesterday, got me curious where people think the North-South divide is, so a poll:
This is probably going to completely fail due to people jumping on stereotypes, but without really thinking too hard about it, if you had to put a north-south divide line on a map where would you put it?

Heartbeat Awareness and Emotions
Feb. 10th, 2009 12:57 pmFollowing on from the previous post about the Dana Centre talk on Emotional Contagion, one of the things that came up in the discussions connected with this was how your emotion state tends to be connected with your physical state. e.g. excitement is associated with increased heart rate, etc.
In this discussion the speaker mentioned a piece of research which suggested that people who can feel their own heartbeat tend to be more emotional.
Ok, interesting theory, but what got me more curious was the implication that there are people who can't feel their own heartbeat. Bizarreness on roller skates!
Guess that just means I must be more emotional then most of you then
*smiles*, *cries*, *giggles* and then *storms off in a huff*
Sounds like an excuse for a poll anyway:

Thinking about memories this morning (and not essays about eportfolios as I really should be *slaps wrist*), has got me wondering about when they start.
You hear a lot of people say "my earliest memory is when I was X and ... happened", but you never really hear people talking about when the main bulk of their memories start (which for me certainly is significantly later).
Probably, best not waste too much time trawling the internet to find out, so have a poll instead:

Vegetarianism and Carnivorous Plants
Dec. 2nd, 2008 06:03 pmSomething I was musing over the other day
[Poll #1308065]
EDIT: To clarify, I was thinking whether it would be suitable for vegetarians to eat carnivorous plants rather than keep them.

Understanding Understanding
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:57 pmMy use of the word understanding as in "A understands B as C" is that C doesn't necessarily have to be correct. In fact misunderstandings and misconceptions are just special types of understanding where C is wrong.
i.e. the sentence "Bob understands a banana to be a small green kangaroo with three legs and a big blue nose" would be perfectly acceptable to me (assuming that was what Bob believed) even though I know this isn't what a banana is.
Obviously omitting "as C" yields "A understands B", which then implies A understands B as a suitably correct definition of B.
It hadn't occurred to me that people may take there to be a implication that C is a valid interpretation of B in the first sentence until the past few days.
It's been quite interesting to see how the discussion of this post has developed. Most people took the sentence to mean something along the lines of A uses B to mean C and interprets B as C when they hear it used by someone else. The question of whether C should be a correct understanding seems a little less straightforward however.
I suspect I've picked up this way of thinking about understanding when I was doing a PGCE a few years ago, as I'm fairly certain it was used this way in some of the articles I had to read.
Anyway, just to round the discussion off. A poll:

...And for my next post I shall explain what I think the subject line of this post means just to continue the sequence...
...or maybe not as the case may be.

Ethnic Morris Dancing
Nov. 26th, 2005 11:12 amSomething I just found on MDDL:
Dance books have a catagory for "Ethnic Dance - English". I've never heard anyone describe Morris Dancing as Ethnic before, but I suppose it is.
And it's also another excuse for a poll (yey, poll!)...
