So I didn't post yesterday because we got back to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's apartment at 1:30ish am. And I had to get up at 7:30 to get to my oncologist's appointment. So no posting.

But here's how the day went. WE got up at 10:00 to pack and check out. Then we got breakfast and coffee from the cafe, and then we got a Lyft to the Harvard natural History Museum.

It was a lovely little museum, great exhibits, and a lot of fun. We saw the glass flowers and sea creatures, a lot of fossils and other displays. Highly recommended if you're in Boston for a day.

We stayed until closing time, the took a Lyft back to the hotel where they were holding our luggage, and we took a Lyft to the restaurant we had planned to eat at. Bad idea, it was far too noisy for our con-wracked constitutions. We left, and waked to the train station and ate in the food court.

A red cap helped us get priority seating, due to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's disability, and we settled in to the trip. I napped.

We arranged with RK to pick us up at Penn, so we did that, and he drove us back to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's place, where we had some quick food, and then went to bed.

I got up at 7:15, and showered and dressed. RK was late getting me due to traffic, but he had gotten coffee for me at Dunkin Donuts. I made it to my oncologist appointment just on time.

There is good news, all is well, and the next time I come, in four months, may be the ast time. I will take a test to see if I can stop the estrogen inhibitor I'm on, too.

We were supposed to go and eat afterward but RK was too tired so he just dropped me off at home, and I owe him a meal.

I collected my mail, including one last Christmas card! from Steve and Amy. The pets were both fine, Oreo was very happy to see me, and has been clingy all day. He had plenty of food left, but I gave him fresh water, and I fed Christie. I had a bowl of cereal, fortunately my milk is still fine.

I took a nap. and then got up and had some food, and set up the computer.

At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB, and at 8:00 I got on Discord to play in my game. But only two others showed up so we cancelled.

I made dinner, and I unpacked my suitcase, and then I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick about tomorrow.

Then I played solitaire til pet feeding time.

And now i want to go to bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. RK.

3. Goo news from the doctor.

4. My pets are fine.

5. Naps.

6. Bed soon.

What does Trump want from Greenland?

Jan. 20th, 2026 03:44 pm
luzribeiro: (Default)
[personal profile] luzribeiro posting in [community profile] talkpolitics

Let's keep this simple.

First thing he wants: To secure the Arctic against Russian encroachment.
What is the sane way to get it: Work with Europe and Denmark on cooperation, strengthen NATO presence, and invest jointly in security and infrastructure in Greenland.
Knowing this is Trump, what is likelier to happen: He damages relations with Europe, bullies allies, and treats Greenland like a real estate deal. Even if US leverage in the Arctic increases short term, the long term damage to trust and alliances helps Russia more than it hurts it.

Next thing he wants: Greenland’s resources (rare earths, minerals, future energy, and shipping routes).
What is the sane way to get it: Long term investment, partnerships with Greenlandic authorities, respect for environmental limits, and shared economic benefits.
What is likelier to happen: Crude pressure on Denmark, zero regard for local consent, and a resource grab mentality that fuels backlash and pushes Greenland and Europe away from the US. Again, Russia (and China) wins long-term.

Next thing he wants: A Nobel Peace Prize.
Well, he's not getting it.
Why he will not get it: You do not win a peace prize by antagonizing allies, undermining institutions, and treating diplomacy as a personal transaction. Even real deals get discounted when they are paired with chaos and threats. And no, he hasn't stopped 8+ wars.

Anything else he wants:
Control of Arctic shipping lanes, keeping China out of the region, and a domestic political win he can sell as “strong leadership” (that last bit might sell to the dumb MAGA crowd, mind you). Greenland is useful to him less as a place, and more as a symbol of power and dominance.

And I won't even begin on the stupidity of the "one boat arrives 500 years ago" pseudo-argument. That's just beyond idiotic.

Again, this is a back-up copy from my other DW ([personal profile] rebec). I figured I'd better make a couple of copies so I don't lose it. It was time for a new entry; the last eleven years or so are floating downstream somewhere.

There are probably spoilers in the comments, which are mostly remarks to myself. But feel free to comment on it! I have almost no one to talk about books with.

Radev the pioneer

[personal profile] asthfghl posting in [community profile] talkpolitics

I know you don't care that much about this corner, and why would you, and yet... Here's a unique case:

Bulgaria's President Radev resigns amid speculation he will form his own party

Bulgaria right now feels like it's in a never-ending political loop. After massive protests over corruption and a government forced to resign just before the holidays, party leaders have failed to form a stable cabinet, and we're staring down our 8th national election in just 5 years. Figures like Boyko Borisov and oligarch-linked powerbrokers such as Delyan Peevski still dominate headlines and public ire, and trust in institutions is at an all-time low.

Enter president Radev*, who has positioned himself against that morass. He's been vocal about fighting corruption, pushing back against the old party networks that seem to keep re-emerging. On foreign policy he's been a bit of a mixed bag, but he's not shy about opposing military aid to Ukraine, and he's repeatedly critiqued both internal corruption and external pressure from oligarchic interests. While he's shown some skepticism about things like the Euro (he insisted on a referendum before adopting it earlier this year, which was never granted), his broader rhetoric has been about democratization. However he's generally seen as mildly pro-Russia, and Euro-skeptic.

What's really extraordinary here, and this is point no one else has to wink at to understand, is that this is basically unprecedented anywhere: a sitting president resigning mid-term with the apparent goal of forming his own party and running in an early parliamentary election. No major comparative example comes close to this exact combination of moves (I've checked extensively). Leaders leave office to run for other positions sometimes, but not like this, not with this much direct political momentum and not when the presidency had been smack in the centre of national debates.

Looking forward, I think Bulgaria is at a tipping point right now. The (now former) president said it himself: this is the first point in recent history when Bulgarians have stopped wanting to just flee to greener pastures, now they prefer to stay and push back against the powers that be instead. So if Radev's new party manages to cause a major shake-up and break the old clientelistic game, it could finally give voters a real alternative and maybe force a stable, reform-oriented majority. On the other hand, the familiar networks could absorb or repel this challenge, dragging us back into fragmentation. Personally, as someone who wants a strong Bulgaria within Europe, anti-corruption reforms, a pro-EU, pro-Euro trajectory and clear support for Ukraine, I see this as a moment where either we could turn a corner or fritter this rare opportunity away. The next few months are going to be incredibly decisive.

* the president has the same surname as myself, LOL! I swear we're not related!

I’m still working on streamlining my anime reporting, trying to get down to just two posts a season – an early tracker and a final count. Here’s the initial summary of the shows I sampled – and which ones are getting attention. (Shows are on Crunchyroll unless otherwise specified.) There are a lot of sequels I’ll be following, too. Note: I still haven’t gotten around to watching the new shows on HIDIVE. I remain stressed for time this month.

Too tired to post much but I had a very good day.

Started with breakfast at the buffet, then came back and showered, dressed, and went to donate blood. The donation went quickly and with relatively little trouble though they had to switch arms so I ended up with bandaids on my right arm and the pressure bandage on the right. And I got a nice tee shirt, long sleeved.

Then I did panels. Had a very good time. Also hung out in the con suite with Larry. At 7:30 I went to the Night Market where the Kid was bartering some of her yarns and jewelry. She gave me a bracelet.

I went to more panels, and then [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I ordered pizza delivery.

We ate in the lobby with Larry, and while we were eating, [profile] masjfanficchick's friend Selkie came over. She is a con staff member. We had a long conversation. We were joined by other con people and that was very nice.

Then we came back up to our room, and cleaned it up a bit. And now it's bed time.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB. No Teaming but email.

2. [personal profile] mashfanficchick.

3. The Kid.

4. Fun panels

5. Pizza.

tl;dr: I went to Seattle to see the TWICE This Is For World Tour Concert at Climate Pledge Arena.

I feel extra fortunate in that I was able to get tickets to two TWICE concerts this month. Of the two concerts, only the first one, in Seattle, was I able to get a fancy VIP Soundcheck reserved seat ticket, which provides:
  • One premium reserved or general admission ticket to the show
  • Access to the pre-show TWICE soundcheck
  • Exclusive VIP gift item
  • VIP laminate and lanyard
  • Pre-show tour merchandise shopping opportunity
  • Early entry to the venue
  • Designated check-in and on-site VIP event staff

I’ve never had this before and I was eager for the experience.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Episode 1

(Spoiler-free Commentary)

The premiere episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is available for free viewing (for I don’t know how long) at YouTube. I made time to watch it last night.

I had been hopeful for a good showing, and I was not disappointed. I’ve always loved Holly Hunter (since Broadcast News... and, yay! The Incredibles!) and want her to be a big success here. Also, I’m a fervent Trekkie – from way back to the actual broadcast years of the original series in the 1960s.

In the episode, Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti were fabulous, as expected. The cadets were the expected variety of races, temperaments, maturity, composure, and intelligence; they have room to grow.

(One odd thought... if you take the academy’s chancellor and most? all? of the academy’s recruits into space... wouldn’t losing them all at once be catastrophic for the academy? I guess we’d better hope that only a small percentage of cadets are on the Athena at any one time. Dunno.)

I don’t have the time nor the budget to subscribe to Paramount+, so I won’t see the remainder of season one until much later. But I’ll continue to monitor reviews. There are always lots of review articles online. I did follow review articles of Foundation and Murderbot when I was watching those series. There are plenty of Starfleet Academy reviews online currently.

There was one article I enjoyed: I Love That Holly Hunter Can’t Sit in a Chair Normally on ‘Starfleet Academy’ at Gizmodo. And I too love that about Captain Ake.

What was quite interesting was the comments section of the article. Apparently a large number of Trekkies really dislike the new show. Reading their complaints was interesting. I hope the producers of the series ignore that feedback and simply continue on their chosen path.

On the other hand, a couple of comments did resonate with me.

I LOVED her doing all that! I'm 5'2" myself and while I don't often get the chance to be in chairs like her character's, I could see myself doing that on occasion. I almost certainly did as a kid. As for those having a "problem" with this show, I am a long-time Trek fan, having started watching as a kid right after it went into syndication in the 1970s (I'm just one year older than the franchise), and I love every iteration. Are they all perfect? No. Do some of them challenge Roddenberry's vision? Of course. Are they woke? You better believe it, from day one 60 years ago! But they never stray so far that you can't recognize the ultimate message: We can be better. We can do our best to be kind, understanding, tolerant, collaborative and uplifting. If you don't like that, fine; don't watch. But don't tell me Starfleet Academy is not Trek, because it very, very much is, and it proved that in the first two episodes right off the bat.
–– MartinC

and:
I liked her character, immensely. And look – I’m 70, and I know they’re targeting a generation that’s several removed from me, but it’s still Trek … and I love it.

And I’ve got to say … when they brought the Athena (god, what a gorgeous starship) down to San Francisco, with Rufus Wainwright singing “you’d better wear some flowers in your hair,” it was practically a religious moment for me. I feel sorry for anyone who can’t share that joy.
–– Zaphod

Haters probably didn’t like Lower Decks or Prodigy or Strange New Worlds either. Well, let them sulk elsewhere. I like all flavors of Trek. (Admittedly, I have some reservations about Enterprise.) Haters include non-Trekkie White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. SMH. Let Miller know that Star Trek has been “woke” for 60 years.

Media Roundup: Sequential Art

Here’s another Media Roundup after not months and months! Hopefully I’ll be reading and watching things other than fic a bit more often and thus post these media roundups more often than I was.

I seem to have gotten into the habit of reading a lot of graphic novels in December and January. I currently have a big pile out from the library – and I’ve read a few of them, and hopefully will get around to even more of the pile.

Lu and Ren’s Guide to Geozoology by Angela Hsieh— A very charming graphic novel about two girls on an adventure. Featuring charming art and very cute geo fauna! (As a Mandarin learner I did find the almost but not quite hanzi characters a little bit frustrating)

The Pale Queenby Ethan M. Aldridge—Another YA graphic novel, this one featuring an f/f romance. I really liked the fae in this book – they were a good mix of beautiful and scary. The art is also lovely!

Crush of Music— I’m still watching this very slowly, the subtitles have mostly been better for the last few episodes –so that’s nice. I’m enjoying seeing Liu Yuning and Zhou Shen interact in this – at one point they played the kazoo together!

Various Batman ect comic—So I mentioned in my 2025 media review post that I accidentally acquired a new fandom, that fandom is batfam. This is embarrassing for me because for years I've been prone to what R calls “the Batman rant” where I complain that punching people in the face is a dumb way to reduce crime rates. Plus I just feel like superhero comics are a space that's pretty hostile to me and my values. But apparently if you give me fic about a family of 3-8 adopted siblings finding each other/bonding and don't make me think too hard about the moral foundations of the universe then I'm willing to suspend my moral disbelief.

Anyways I got sucked in enough to be curious about the source material and have been reading stuff on hoopla. I'm fairly impressed with their comic reading interface too, it has a nice flow. (It doesn’t play well with my RSI issues but then neither does turning pages) The actual stories vary in quality, but some of them are surprisingly good. Even the not very good ones are surprisingly more-ish. I’m bringing a lot of emotional investment in these characters from my fic reading which also helps make the comics more engaging.

The Cross-Dressed Union—I thought that if my media theme at the moment is comfort that I should really start a new crossdressing girl drama since that's a big comfort trope of mine, So I asked around for recs and started this drama about an arranged marriage between a crossdressing woman and crossdressing man. It sounded fun but so far I’m pretty meh about it. I think my biggest problem is that the ML is the main character, and for these kinds of stories I prefer more focus on the FL. Also it's not doing enough with gender

Every year since 2008, I've taken the opportunity to write about my annual reflections and future plans. The plans really come to fruition as they are more motivational than realistic, but if I get more than half of what I seek to achieve done, that's invariably a good year. Usually, I manage these reflections in the last week of December or the first week of January, but of course, when you're gazing over Antarctica, the sublime beauty of nature gives reason to delay. But now I have left that grandeur and the lively cities of Latin America to return to the relative calmness of Melbourne with my work and study.

The past year wasn't nearly as busy as the previous, but there was still a great deal of activity and progression. I paid off my apartment in Southbank, which hosted four major themed parties, continuing proof that my apartment can hold more than a score of people. I travelled to the Northern Territory, New Zealand, China (twice), Chile, Lima, Argentina, Antarctica, and especially the South Atlantic. From these journeys, I can mark visiting The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, the Nanjing Memorial, Machu Picchu, and, of course, Antarctica as major locations. And I must mention that my health continued a turn for the better with almost 35kg being shed between June 2024 and June 2025 as I have revived a long-dormant athleticism.

In academic life, I completed three units in my doctorate studies at Euclid University, each with A-grade results (I'm a swot), along with two online courses from the University of Edinburgh (music theory) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Spanish), hosted a Murdoch University alumni event and, for what it's worth, was in the top 0.1% of users on Duolingo for the third year in succession, completing the Spanish language course. In other writings, there were eight articles for Rocknerd, six for Isocracy, and another 15 on other sites.

I gave two conference presentations in New Zealand, as well as brief presentations and panel participation in Australia and China, along with an extensive philosophy presentation on Daoism and Stoicism, which resulted in some permanent ink being etched into my skin. Unexpectedly, I also delivered a Christmas service. At work, I delivered 15 HPC training workshops, organising three researcher technical presentations, in addition to usual technical and managerial tasks. Plus, I've been running three non-profit incorporated associations. Through the ACFS, I hosted and organised at least four events, wrote a dozen articles, attended ten concerts, events, and received delegations. Perhaps one of the most important actions of the year, however, was fundraising for the Isla Bell Charitable Fund through the RPG Review Cooperative; over $15K, mostly through the sales of my personal collection.

Despite all this, there are a lot of things I didn't get done in 2025 that I initially planned to do. These remain on a "to-do" list and will make up the bulk of activity in the initial months of this year. I know I want to travel more, and I have already made plans for my next adventure. I certainly have to continue my current doctoral studies in climatology, economics, and international law, as it remains a great priority in my life. However, I will admit that beyond this, I have yet to build firm plans for the year. Perhaps over the next few weeks, this will coalesce into something more definite. However, as I expressed on the morning of the year, I do have a theme: Do what matters. Live deliberately. Act despite fears. Don't postpone. Memento mori.

Ultimate edition of Innovation (photo on FB), with tweaked rules and all the expansions. I didn't know there were *any* expansions.

I assumed the expansions would be more variety of base cards, but no, instead they're *all* add ons which add a new sort of card to each age. The cards from each expansion are drawn in a different way, and act differently, but can be melded into the player board somehow like base cards.

So far the extras only come up every so often, but matter when they come up.

I can't believe the new edition added a new age, age 11, prudence, after age 10, the information age. But it *does* seem to fit. More powerful than age 10, but less wildly accelerating. I guess they can add a new age every 15-20 years when real world society has moved on far enough...

This game was with cities. I *again* relied on mathematics to skip through ages, but this time managed to score just enough to get the achievements first rather than second as I went. The game ended when I got computers, internet, and a couple more cards that meld and execute a card from age 10, catapulting my board into three age 10 cards, one age 9, and one age 1.

Getting up this morning got confusing. But I got breakfast from the buffet, ran into Larry there.

Then went back to bed for awhile but didn't sleep so I got up and showered and dressed, and was one of the first to get my badge printed up and everything. [personal profile] mashfanficchick wasn't feeling well and was still in bed after having gotten up even earlier than me to have breakfast. So I set about to kill time til the convention really started.

I ended up spending an hour or so with Larry in the lobby. Then I went back to the room, and was starting to use the computer when the Kid texted that she and her boyfriend were having drinks in the restaurant and I should come and say hello. So I did that, and we had a nice time. I had the first panel I wanted to go to at 3:00 so I only stayed about a half hour or 45 minutes.

Then I went to that panel, and that went until 4:00. I went back to the restaurant but they had left so I went up to the room again. [personal profile] mashfanficchick was getting up. so I waited for zer, and then we went down and ze got zer badge and went to the dealers room and I went to another panel.

I made an appointment for the blood drive tomorrow, at 11:15.

We met up for Songs of the Supernatural, which was fun, and then went to the Dealers Room together.

Then we had dinner, called in Indian food, and ate down in the lobby.

Then when we were done we went to a book release party, and I bought a book. Larry was there, he also has an 11:15 appointment for the blood drive.

We stayed at the party tl 12:00 then came back to the room where I started here.

Sadly no talking to the FWiB today but we enailed.

In case you missed the headlines (or your car texted you the alert), German regulators have effectively forced Toyota's premium Lexus brand to turn off the remote pre-heating feature on hundreds of thousands of combustion-engine vehicles sold in Germany so you can no longer cozy up a frozen car at the tap of an app before you've even found your gloves. The official line is refreshingly undramatic: lawmakers consider unattended idling "avoidable pollution", so Toyota flipped a software switch to keep owners out of trouble, while all-electric and plug-in models still get their toasty interiors:

Meanwhile, in the "send this to your cousin who thinks AI writes secret laws" corner of the internet, some outlets are gleefully proclaiming that Germany has declared remote start a crime against humanity and that "Big Brother" is yanking buttons right out of your dashboard:

That sort of sensational spin makes great water-cooler outrage but only serves to remind us that the real world often has perfectly rational explanations - even if it's colder waiting for your windshield to defrost.
