Things you never knew about BBC news readers...

I didn't know the BBC was that sort of place?

So, last week Pete told me it was going to be his last practice this week, so I emailed everyone in the side to say we'd have a short practice go to the pub early and that it would be nice if people associated with the side who doesn't regularly come to practice met us there.

When I saw him in the evening at Ely, it turned out he was going to be able to make 2 practices, so I sent a quick email around to tell everyone it had been postponed by a week when I got back Sunday. However, it turns out it was his last practice tonight after all, but we didn't find out until the end of the evening, so we didn't finish early. Luckily [livejournal.com profile] dancin_dan and I had bought a card in Ely before during the day and it had made it's way to practice, so it could quickly go around everyone as we left for the pub.

Not quite as planned, but a brilliant example of organisation Thrales style.

So last weekend I once again failed to make it to one of [livejournal.com profile] cartesiandemon's parties. As I was getting a bit short of facepaint for yesterday, I thought I'd pop out and get some first, so walked to Eltham, where there was supposedly a stockist according to the snazaroo website.

I, however, realised my mistake on arriving at Eltham and discovering the mile post stating it was 8 miles back to London Bridge (and also the fact that I had appeared to have dropped off the end of my little A-Z). As a result it didn't end up being a very quick trip out to the shops, especially as I went via Maritime Greenwich. It wasn't a complete success either as the shop seemed somewhat closed (in the completely gutted with a "to let" sign outside sense).

The trip was quite fun all the same, and involved:

  • Discovering the really good second CD exchange shop in Greenwich, where you can pick up all the old CDs that no one is really interested in for about £2 each (more popular ones were more expensive. They seem to set an initial price and reduce it by a pound every no and then looking at the price tags they had). OK, 10 CDs may be excessive, but it's not as if they cost me much (may talk about what I got in a separate post at some point in the distant future when I finally get around to it).

  • Lots of charity shops. Clearly I've always needed a silver stilton spoon! *nods convincingly*

  • Peering through the window of Allodi Accordions and going "ooo, shiney!", as is the law when walking down Lee High Road. OK, I can't afford one and I can't even play one, but there's still something really cool about having an accordion shop nearby

  • Much exploration

Ok, in the end I resorted to ordering facepaint online and if I'd done that in the first place I could have gone with the original plan and gone to Cambridge. One of these days, I may actually make it to one of [livejournal.com profile] cartesiandemon's parties. Either that or he'll give up inviting me given the number of times I've said I'll come and failed to make it *hangs head in shame*.

Angmering is a funny place. Firstly the station is no where near the village itself (as I found out when I asked for directions to the pub in the off licence by the station only to find out I was somewhere that wasn't Angmering). Secondly all the roads look the same and finally to make matters even worse, they swap them all around while your not looking making it impossible to find your way back to the station again. Luckily some of the dancers from one of the other sides we'd been dancing with spotted me looking lost by the road and offered me a lift to Worthing where a pick up the train I would have been on anyway.

Other than that, I seem to have unintentionally made a good attempt at trying to knock out Graham's teeth (although thankfully I failed).

All in all, I don't think last night is in the running for the most successful dance out I've ever been on and maybe it's just safest if I just avoid Angmering entirely in the future. It was a well organised evening though and fun enough to compensate for my incompetence.

Locked Out

So, in a case of playing with my new mobile too much to see what it would do, I managed to lock myself out of it (without even having a PIN switch on - don't ask!) and now need a PUK code to unlock it.

As it's a T-mobile SIM, I went onto the T-mobile website to find out the PUK code (I know you can get the O2 ones off their website fairly easily) and indeed they have a page to tell you how to get your PUK code.

Key highlights:

Have you entered the wrong PIN code several times?

...
Step 1 Sign up or log in to My T-Mobile
...

Not signed up for My T-Mobile yet?

Sign up for My T-Mobile now....Once you've signed up, simply follow steps one, two and three above to access your PUK.

So, I followed their instructions (yes, completely out of character for me) and signed up.

As with many sites, they send you an Activation PIN to clarify you are who you say you. Unsurprisingly, they send this to your mobile.

Erm...

So, I therefore need access to my mobile to get the code to access the code to allow me to access my mobile?

Erm...

Well, at least I got a good laugh out of it all...

(Rang T-mobile this morning, as my SIM is from a third-party, I need to get the PUK code off them and their phone lines aren't open on Sundays. Bother!)

Having finally caught up with episodes 4 and 5 of Being Human, I thought I'd watch the last episode this evening.

Turns out I forgot to download it and it's no longer available (not surprising as it finished a while ago now).

Oh well, guess I don't get to find out what happened in the end then.

Bother!

The height of incompetence that is the Student Loan Company, appear to have finally realised that, although they wrote 5 years ago, saying they were going to start taking repayments, they have so far failed to do so.

I guess this might mean they might actually start taxing me for some of it back. *is still shocked at how incompetent they can actually be*

Given past experience with them, I think I'd best keep a photocopy of this form with my employers details on and then send it recorded delivery, just to be prepared for them to lose it and try and fine me for ignoring it.

Received an email from DERT 2009 today, including:

This is just a reminder to bring back the perpetual trophies.

Thrales, you have the Tyzack and Traditional ones

*worries briefly about losing a trophy and then checks photo*

No, definitely just one trophy and a few shields there.

EDIT: News just in whilst writing that post - Apparently they've found it now, no idea what happened to it last year, but we probably had plenty without it.

Magician to endure cheese stunt

Hehe! David Blane eat your heart out!

Would love to see this, but suspect chances of me being anywhere near Weston-super-Mare on 20th are fairly minimal (especially with it being a Friday and me being at work in London).

Oh well, ho-hum.

EDIT: Just noticed the year of the article, so definitely not going to get to see it *feels really silly*.

I seem to have real problems with dates in Sept... February and for some reason seem to refer to them as being in any month but (September and November seem particular favourites for this).

It happens every year, so I've come to the conclusion it must be some form of allergy.

As November starts on Sunday, I think I'll just have to stock up on tissues, sit it out and hope for the best... (luckly it's only short)

Last night on the way home, I arrived at Paddington to discover everything was delayed due to a car hitting a bridge at Hayes.

After a wait they finally added my stop to one of the Reading trains that was about to leave (doesn't normally stop here, but actually left about the same time as the one that normally would). They only announce the extra stops just before it left, so I ended up in the last carriage.

When we arrived at the station at home, I opened the train door to find a distinct lack of platform, just a drop down to track level. The platform itself started a few meters further up the train. Wasn't enough time to get further up the train to the platform so ended up going to Slough and getting First Great Western to pay for a Taxi back (after several questions along the lines of "Are you sure the doors opened?").

When deseeding dried chillis, wear gloves.

Still a slight burning feeling in my fingertips, despite it being 12 hours ago and trying to treat them with any suggestion that sounded vaguely sensible (there were a couple of sites on the internet suggesting neat bleach, which strangely enough I wasn't inclined to try).

CocoaDirect

I think I've finally come to the conclusion that I shouldn't by CocoaDirect anymore as it just confuses me.

Will still try and buy fairtrade, but not something that features the word Cocoa on the packet in big letters, whilst not actually being cocoa.

Am I the only person who sees it in the cupboard, sees the word cocoa and uses it as cocoa only to remember that it isn't after finishing cooking whatever I've been cooking? OK, the yule log only ended up slightly less chocolatey and slightly more sugary, which wasn't really noticable, but it wasn't what I was aiming to do and it's not the first time I've done it.
