When deseeding dried chillis, wear gloves.

Still a slight burning feeling in my fingertips, despite it being 12 hours ago and trying to treat them with any suggestion that sounded vaguely sensible (there were a couple of sites on the internet suggesting neat bleach, which strangely enough I wasn't inclined to try).

Vaguely sensible suggestion; capsiacin is soluble in fat. Wash your fingertips in full-fat milk (or cream if you can get it).

Or vodka.

Things not to do:

Handle raw chillies

Rub your eyes after handling raw chillies

I spent a very embarressing day at Elly and Nick's with an eggcup on my eye because I got chilli in my eye. No fun :-(

Did try milk, which helped to some extent and tasted re-assuringly spicy when I drank it afterwards.

Lime juice/vinegar seemed provide the most relief though (enough to allow me to sleep aftewards).

Or use a knife and fork, to avoid touching them at all. It makes you look silly but if anybody's watching me cook in the specific hope of laughing at me doing something silly they probably shouldn't get fed.
