Thinking about memories this morning (and not essays about eportfolios as I really should be *slaps wrist*), has got me wondering about when they start.

You hear a lot of people say "my earliest memory is when I was X and ... happened", but you never really hear people talking about when the main bulk of their memories start (which for me certainly is significantly later).

Probably, best not waste too much time trawling the internet to find out, so have a poll instead:

Actually, my earliest memory is from before I was one. I only have one like that. It's interesting primarily because it, and the one from when I was 2 or so, are the only memories in which I don't think in words.

You've confused me here, I'm not sure what you mean by thinking in words?

Thinking about my memories they more visual images, sounds, feelings, etc rather than words (there are several I'm not even sure I could put into words), so I'm lost as to what you mean.

Ah. My early memories are all as you describe; later than that, they have text. In fact, I think in spelled out text - I only realised this when I noticed that I had a hard time mentally adjusting the spelling of a guy named Tollef (previously in my head as 'Ptolef').

It seems to work a bit more continuously than that in my brain - I remember patches, and the patches get more numerous as I get older.

(Five is about the halfway point on the steepest bit of the curve, but it's quite hard for me to figure out.)

I suppose it would make more sense for it to be a continuous development.

For me moving provides a clear event marker, but that's probably not going to be the case for most.

Hey, Owen,

I'm very impressed with your graphics, BUT on the topic of e-Portfolios, you probably have not seen my sites. Plenty of material for you essays:
