The Cheerful Insanity of Me

The Internet is an endless stream of useless information, whatever you want as long as it's utterly pointless it's bound to be on there.

Therefore, this morning when I suddenly found myself in need of a Welsh translation of "My hovercraft is full of eels" (as you do), I had absolutely no doubt that some sad lonely individual would have created a page with various obscure translations including Welsh, and hey presto here's one.

Nice to know the internet is there for a purpose.

The arrows from each language balloon points to the languages they use to indicate gobbledygook (i.e. in the same way we say that something is "all greek to me").

I love the way it almost forms a hierarchy from Heavenly Script being the most gibberish, going through Chinese and then down into the other languages.

My use of the word understanding as in "A understands B as C" is that C doesn't necessarily have to be correct. In fact misunderstandings and misconceptions are just special types of understanding where C is wrong.

i.e. the sentence "Bob understands a banana to be a small green kangaroo with three legs and a big blue nose" would be perfectly acceptable to me (assuming that was what Bob believed) even though I know this isn't what a banana is.

Obviously omitting "as C" yields "A understands B", which then implies A understands B as a suitably correct definition of B.

It hadn't occurred to me that people may take there to be a implication that C is a valid interpretation of B in the first sentence until the past few days.

It's been quite interesting to see how the discussion of this post has developed. Most people took the sentence to mean something along the lines of A uses B to mean C and interprets B as C when they hear it used by someone else. The question of whether C should be a correct understanding seems a little less straightforward however.

I suspect I've picked up this way of thinking about understanding when I was doing a PGCE a few years ago, as I'm fairly certain it was used this way in some of the articles I had to read.

Sometimes Livejournal makes me wonder whether I'm just utterly hopeless at communication.

I don't know whether I've just got a particularly different way of phrasing things, but I don't think I have, which makes me wonder why when I say things on here people's replies seem to take a completely different meaning of what I said to what I meant. This seems to result in me often re-phrasing previous comments in replies to try and get the original point across rather than developing the ideas further as I would like to.
