This may seem strange, but recently ever time I see a power cable suspended across the road, there's been a pair of shoes hanging from it.

Is this some sort of new fashion craze I'm unaware of?

or just a conspiracy?

Perhaps the shoes are stalking me?

Argh! The shoes are coming to get me!

Help! Save me from the shoes!

There was a pair of shoes hanging from a telegraph wire in Girton village for ages. No idea why.

Shoes count as unnecessary extra weight to them - think about it: if enough people are captured, the weight of their shoes add up to weight of another potential abductee and so they leave them behind. Time to start wearing tinfoil under your hat...
