Or rather, it depends. Most of the time, the idea is to have fun, be excited, or perhaps give oneself hope.

Sometimes you're aiming to make moneyh by knowing more than someone, or to consolidate risks into a sensible place (if the mob are breaking my legs because I owe them £2X and I only have X, then I've nothing to lose by staking X, and may win legs).

If you're money laundering, the aim is to *stake* money; winning or losing is fairly irrelevent, so long as it's about even.

Most of the time you'd expect to lose money, but that doesn't mean it's an eaim.

The point, if you're the house, is most definitely to make money. And most of them do, sometimes significant amounts.

The point of betting is for the house to make you believe that you can make money, while actually taking every penny they can get their hands on :)
