There is a distinct correlation between good alcohol and glass bottles. Wine boxes tend to contain the same stuff that comes in glass bottles.

Um. They don't strike me as providing as good a seal as a cork, which suggests the wine hasn't been in the bottle all that long, which seems to me to suggest it will be of poor quality. It's not terribly rational.

Hmmm, ooh. I always automatically look for glass bottles (with any sort of top), but only now does it occur to me a carton with a tap actually might be easier.

bag in box does have the advantage of minimising the air contact of the wine once opened. The bag obviously collapses as the liquid's drained rather than leaving a space for air.

It strikes me that with certain red wines you want a certain amount of oxidation to occur before drinking.

Yes, if you have a very young tannic red, you want oxidation to "age" it faster and soften the tannins for drinking (leaving a bottle to breath doesn't really do a lot though, because of the small surface area in touch with the air - decanting works much better...)

Then again, some wines are even deliberately oxidised by the winemaker to give them an oxidised flavour, olorosso sherry for example

Mostly because glass bottles look like a bottle of wine, and people are unlikely to be offended when presented with one, whereas the other things are risky. The closure thing is a little less obvious and more snooty to mention, so it probably wouldn't be an issue.

Yes. Though it occurs to me most of my friends pride themselves on being unconstrained by traditions, so perhaps I should try brining a box one time.

The only real issue is because of these views it's generally only "cheap plonk" that's sold as bag in box - lowering the public view of bag in the box and we're stuck in a catch 22 situation.

At the end of the day, if you can get more for selling your wine in a bottle you will...

Yes, I rather feared that might be the case[1]. We could buy the most acceptable available wine in bags, and then refill with the wine we want from whatever medium. But seems to be going backward...

I used to have one on my penknife, but it broke when I tried to open a bottle of wine with it.

We subsequently destroyed a saucepan with the bottle of wine (when trying to smash the bottle of wine with the saucepan), and eventually gave up and drank something else.

I've lost the penknife too now, so I doubly don't have a corkscrew.

Because I am a snob and would be suspicious of wine in other sorts of containers.
