Our school (CCHS) got into trouble in their last OFSTED report for not having a daily act of collective worship :).
Generally I think they should scrap 'Assemblies', they were always interminably dull.
Compulsory worship is a thoroughly bad idea. Worship that's available and goes on around you and you can join in or keep quiet as you choose is less of a thoroughly bad idea, but still has big implementation difficulties.
But assemblies are a good way of getting whole year groups, groups of years or even the whole school in some cases together on a regular basis. They form an ideal opportunity for members of the community to come in and share stuff with the children.
It seems a good place to provide religious leaders with a platform to share their beliefs with the children (but I feel that all the religions should have equal opportunity to use this medium). However, I really disagree with this taking the form of worship as it assumes belief.
If it's just going on around you and you can just join in has the problem that it is going to be thoroughly boring for a lot of non-believers and in a way makes it feel as if they're being penalised and have to sit there in silence as a result of their non-belief.
Religion should be viewed as the barbaric, superstitious practice that it is and have no place in a center of learning and study. A society that holds education in higher regard than war would soon do away with such medieval thinking.
Saw a bumper sticker the other day: "Don't pray in my school and I won't think in your church" - made me chuckle.
