Peak Trains

OK a step in the right direction, but 2014? That's 7 years away, surely we could manage to get a more significant amount of rolling stock on the lines by then?
Thinking about the figures the BBC give. If 1,000 is 1/10 of the current fleet that's only a 10% increase in 7 years. If the rail usage continues to increase by 10% each year then that's around a 95% increase over 7 years. That's an extra 8500 carrages (in addition to the extra 1,000 the government are funding) full of people we're not providing for.
Aren't we supposed to be trying to encourage people to use public transport rather than driving everywhere? I've heard of lots of people who prefer to drive (even if it means paying the congestion charge) then try squeezing into one of the peak trains.
We're already at the stage where however much you squeeze people into these carrages, some people are being left behind.
These extra carriages are a start, but are only a tiny step towards what is required.
Maybe this would be a better use for the money we're about to waste on renewing Trident?
